Green Golden Globes

January 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This year’s Golden Globes were the greenest and best ever. It was such a relief to not have to sit through the rich people’s extravaganza showing off to the world just how wealthy and glamorous and how much better off and how much better than you they all are. Afterall, they are the stars and it’s all about them. The adoring fans willingly drool and chase after them.

It was great not having to hear the sycophantic Hollywood rich suck up and kiss ass for their next big role. It was nice not having to be reminded of what the rich have and what the rest of us did not know that we have to have. Watching these people parade around with their wealth on display reminding us that they got theirs and we can only wish we had what they have is enough to make some of us purge and go bolimic.

It was nice that America could holiday away from slavishly admiring the Hollywood Royalty. The rich love it when the rest of us lust after what they have. We remind ourselves of just how inferior we are to those who have great wealth.

Spare us the Hollywood Arms Race. If America and Hollywood really want a “green” environment, let the Hollywood rich just stay home and spare the carbon footprint. These Golden Globes were the greenest ever but there were still enough commercials to spur people to go out and consume and add to the environmental deficit that we continue to rack up.

And let’s not forget about the writers who are on strike. This year’s Golden Globes remind us that there are people on strike who are demanding respect and fair payment for the work that they do. Hollywood awards shows should be low key. They should be greener and they should show respect to those behind the scenes who make it all happen. Golden Globe glitz and glamour is a lot of hocus pocus that enriches those who have more than they deserve or need.

Spare the airtime and spare the air. Reduce the amount of airtime that television devotes to pageantry and get off the roads so that we can give the environment a rest.
